As the Pinoy community gears up to join the various celebrations marking the 119th Anniversary of Philippine Independence, there is some concern in our ‘kababayans’ hearts over what is presently happening in our country. Martial law was declared in the south and there is fear that it might spread throughout the entire country. The dreaded Martial Law of the Marcos era is still fresh in the minds of the Pinoys although it was declared on September 23 of 1972 and was lifted on January 17, 1982.
Many sad experiences were recorded during the Marcos martial law era, and Pinoys pray hard that that part of the nation’s history will never be repeated. President Rodrigo Duterte has given assurances that the Marawi situation is under control but still, Pinoys fear the worst.
Here in Canada, where Pinoys have found a safe haven, far from the unpredicatable and fearsome plight of our kababayans in our homeland, our hearts are filled with worry for our loved ones back home. This month is supposed to be a month of celebrations to commemorate the country’s 119th Anniversary of Philippine Independence. All we can do is make the most of it and gather with our kababayans and be one with them in helping make the events happy and successful. Event organizers have painstakingly prepared the venue, the food and the entertainment for everyone to enjoy. Please join the scheduled festivals and celebrations and have fun with our kababayans.
We have had several gorgeous days of sunshine and we know that this is a sign that summer is just around the corner. People have started crowding our beautiful beaches on these much anticipated warm days , seniors have started enjoying long walks in parks, and cyclists have tuned up their bikes for those uphill climbs. We really are so lucky here in British Columbia. Besides having magnificent scenery of majestic mountains of richly green trees perfectly scuplted on the beautiful terrain of running brooks, with crystal clear water, we enjoy refeshing, clean unpolluted air.
Many of us have been fortunate enough to have travelled other parts of the world, and yet have profoundly and genuinely appreciated the fact that they have chosen Vancouver as their home. I myself have had the pleasure of visiting a few places in Europe and Asia, and I still instantly profess my passion for the beauty and splendour of British Columbia. Driving through the Rockies, one would immediately witness the hand of GOD at work, carving every stone, planting every tree, painting the sky the most attractive tint of blue, and marvel at the masterpiece of GOD;s creation, for only a supernatural Being can create such supernatural beauty.
Nothing compares to this piece of heaven, that we have chosen for our residence, called Vancouver. We should appreciate and value the breathtaking magnificence of this place we now call home.and take pride in it.
Let us help preserve the natural charm and splendid appeal of one of the most liveable places in the world by doing what it takes to maintain its green status.
